Field Trips can start as early as 10am. Field Trips start at minimum 2 hours long and can be extended up to 4 hours with add-on activities such as the Fossil Hunt, Movies, and Workshops. 

Planning Your Field Trip

 

Discover your inspiration at the IMAG History and Science Center through our Field Trips. IMAG Field Trips offer an engaging two to four-hour experience for students every weekday.

Planning your field trip at the IMAG is easy! First, look over all the experiences we offer; then decide what works best for your and your group. Then fill out our Field Trip Request Form at the bottom of the page. We will get in touch with you to confirm the trip!

 *All prices are per student (excluding 3D movie, all paid chaperones are charged for a movie.) Please note that the museum requires a ratio of 1 adult per every 10 students, including teachers. Any chaperones needed to meet this ratio are free of charge. Additional chaperones are welcome and will be charged the applicable General admission price. IMAG memberships or other discounts may not be used by chaperones or students in connection with a field trip and group rates. There is a 15-student minimum for field trips. 

**Price is per show; shows are capped at 100 total participants. The first show is $200, and the subsequent is $150.

Field Trip Attendance

 

The minimum attendance per field trip is 15 students. The maximum number of students and chaperones permitted in one group is 180. 

We require a minimum ratio of one adult to every ten students. Teacher admission free; any additional chaperones needed to meet this minimum will also be admitted free of charge. Groups should be sub-divided into groups of no more than 20 per group.

Groups may not combine while touring the IMAG to ensure timely visits to each exhibit space. 

IMAG floor exhibits are self-guided experiences, with staff guiding certain activities such as the Touch Tank and Fossil Hunt. 

Chaperone Requirements

 

One chaperone is required for every ten students. Each required chaperone will receive complimentary admission. The 10:1 of student/chaperone is a minimum requirement of all field trips.

Teachers and IMAG members are considered chaperones, included in the total chaperone count, and subject to pricing guidelines.

3D Movies

T. REX: For over a hundred years dinosaurs have inspired and thrilled audiences, commanding blockbuster status in museums and at the box office. But among them towers a king—a tyrant lizard king. With leaps in CGI wizardry and revolutions in tyrannosaur paleontology over the past twenty-five years, the time has come to revisit rex in the world’s prestigious museum cinemas. Working with top tyrannosaur scientists, a coalition of natural history institutions, and pioneering paleo and visual effects artists, GSF’s original giant screen production on this iconic dinosaur—and its carnivorous Cretaceous cousins—aims to be the most dazzling and accurate T. rex documentary ever made. With hat tips to famous specimens, landmark discoveries, and wild cinematic depictions over the last century, the film will explore the interplay between speculation and evidence, and reveal how the process of science refreshes and reimagines our understanding of this legendary dinosaur.

Penguin Island: Shot on the dramatic and uninhabited sub-Antarctic Crozet Archipelago, home to over half a million breeding pairs of penguins, the film chronicles the arrival of a lone, determined male suitor, driven by instinct to return to this treeless island in the vast Southern seas. Here, against all odds, he must find a special someone among a cacophony of colony rivals, protect a precious egg, and start a family. Navigating a world of hungry orcas, predatory petrels, and feuding elephant seals, a touching story of perseverance and parental care emerges, offering a family-friendly, timeless tale at the windswept and beautiful edge of the world.

For over nine months the production team braved overwhelming extremes to bring this remarkable penguin odyssey to the giant screen—diving into otherworldly kelp forests, pointing cameras into wind-blasting volcanic ash, and camping among brutish and aggressive island wildlife. The result is an immersive voyage to the hidden world of a most beloved animal, a faraway penguin island rarely seen by humans.

Blue Whales: Return of the Giants: Blue Whales are the largest animal that has ever lived, bigger than dinosaurs. They grow longer than a jetliner and their tongue weighs as much as an elephant. The Giant Screen is the only place where you can see them life-size! Join an adventure of a lifetime to discover a long-lost Blue Whale pod in a remote corner of the ocean, where no scientists or film crews have explored before. What the expedition reveals will help inspire new marine protected areas.

Science Shows

Science Shows are a large format show with one of our trained educators demonstrating experiments and scientific tricks from a theme of your choosing!

Science Show Themes

  • Fire and Ice: Chill out with cool dry ice and liquid nitrogen demonstrations and then heat things up with fire tornadoes, Whoosh tubes, and a rainbow assortment of fireballs as you learn about the chemistry behind some of our most chilling and fiery demonstrations! (recommended for grades 3-6)
  • The Wright Stuff: Take flight with us as we explore the forces of motion, principles of flight, and history of flight! We will slingshot gliders and make them float in mid-air. We’ll use leaf blowers to make beach balls hover over our heads and giant vortex cannons to shoot massive smoke rings! Be sure to duck as rockets zip towards the ceiling, drones swoop over your heads, and rolls of toilet paper are unraveled and launched into the audience! (recommended for grades K-6)
  • The Glow Show: We’re turning out the lights and turning up the glow! Learn about bioluminescence, fluorescence, phosphorescence, and chemiluminescence through glow-in-the-dark experiments and demonstrations! Discover what makes glow sticks light up! Watch glowing Mentos fountains erupt! (recommended for grades 2-6)
  • Blockbuster Science: Discover the science behind some of Hollywood’s special effects, explosions, and magical moments and be amazed by science demonstrations inspired by some of your favorite films! From making fireballs to shattering props with liquid nitrogen to creating creepy fog with dry ice, learn some of Hollywood’s movie tips and tricks in this fun show! (recommended for grades 3-6)
  • Wheel of STEAM: Spin the Wheel of STEAM to determine what we do! The Wheel will be filled with all kinds of big, fun science, technology, engineering, art, and math experiments and demonstrations! This is an interactive show that focuses on the importance of STEAM! (recommended for grades K-6)
  • Don’t Try This At Home: Get ready for a messy, hair-raising, explosive, freezing and dangerous show! Watch us create colorful fireballs, ignite giant Whoosh Tubes, light bubbles on fire in our hands, erupt a giant bubbling Nitrogen cloud, make paint cans explode, create arcs of lightning with our Van de Graff Machine and more! Each show will be a unique mix of some of our craziest demonstrations! Just remember: Don’t try this at home! Try it with us at The IMAG instead! (recommended for grades 3-6)

We will be in touch shortly once your form is submitted! Should your requested dates be unavailable, we will do our best to provide alternatives. Please note that your field trip is not booked until we have sent you a confirmation email.  If you do not receive a confirmation or contact to clarify any information needed, we have NOT received your form!

All communication regarding field trips will be through email only. All field trip requests must start with the submission of this form. No changes, cancellations, or reschedulings can be requested over phone. Please email katelyn@theimag.org with any questions.

We can accommodate up to 180 total (students+adults) per trip. If you have more than 180 people, we will reach out about splitting your trip over multiple days. Please ensure that there is 1 adult per every 10 students (so a group of 60 will require at least 6 adults present).

Groups can be a maximum size of 20 students. For example, 60 students must be split into at least 3 classes. We WILL build group schedules based on this limit; please make sure you plan with it in mind.

We can build one workshop per field trip. See our listings above for workshop choices. You must choose a specific workshop; IMAG cannot choose one for you. Due to camp using our classrooms, we do not offer workshops during Lee County school breaks (fall, winter, summer, and spring).

If you have not added on any additional activities, your field trip will be 2 hours long (2.5 hours if you have a lunch break). Add-ons are required to stay longer. The Communications Coordinator will reach out if your requested field trip length and activities do not match up. Please be aware that the IMAG closes at 5 PM and we cannot accommodate field trips past closing time. Please note that we build your trip schedules to the arrival and departure times requested here.

I have read and agree with the Cancellation/Rescheduling Policy(Required)
The IMAG requires two weeks’ notice for rescheduling or cancelling your reservation. Cancellations made with less than two weeks’ notice will result in a cancellation fee of $50. Reschedule requests made with less than two weeks’ notice will be based on availability and result in a $25 reschedule fee. “No Shows” will be charged a $100 fee. All cancellations or reschedule requests must be submitted via email to the IMAG Reservations Department, to the source of your Confirmation Email. You will receive an emailed confirmation verifying your cancellation or reschedule request. IF YOU DO NOT GET A RESPONSE, WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED YOUR MESSAGE.

The Communications Coordinator will email the Confirmation Email for your field trip. You must submit your final headcounts for students, teachers, and chaperones in writing to the Coordinator no later than one week (7 days) prior to your reservation. The invoice will reflect the final confirmed headcount at that point; no reductions in program attendance will be allowed after this deadline. Additional attendees, after the final headcount is confirmed, will be allowed and charged at the group rate provided if space is available. Chaperones: For scheduled groups, teachers are admitted free with up to one free chaperone per ten paid students/participants for field trips, if needed to meet our 1:10 adult:student ratio. Bus drivers are also admitted free, but are not counted towards the supervision ratio as they do not always enter for the duration of the trip and therefore do not supervise. Additional teachers/chaperones will be charged according to the price chart above. This money is to be included in the overall field trip payment or collected by the group leader and submitted as one payment at the front desk upon arrival. Any chaperones that go to the front desk individually to pay will be charged the full admission price. No memberships, coupons, passes or other discounts may be used for field trips for teachers, chaperones, or students. Payment: All field trips must be paid in full prior to or upon arrival, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Reservations Department in writing via email.
I understand that ALL field trip communication should be via email, and that any phone calls regarding a field trip will be asked to send an email instead. No changes, cancellations, or rescheduling can be taken over the phone.
