History Saturdays

Join us on the third Saturday of every month from 10AM – 1PM for a fascinating look into Southwest Florida’s history! Visit the front desk to find out more!

History Saturdays are free with museum admission, and are brought to you by a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Cape Coral.

March 19, 2022: Art. We will examine art from Native Floridians and the importance of it to their culture. Guests will have the opportunity to recreate these artworks out of salt dough.

April 16, 2022: Post-war Lee County. We will examine Lee County’s population boom and real estate development after World War II and the creation of new cities like Cape Coral. Using our Google Earth Wall, we will look at important cities throughout the county, and guests will get to develop their own city blueprint.

May 21, 2022: Page Field and RSW Airport. We will explore the history of two of Lee County’s most important airports. From Page Field’s beginnings in 1927 as a civil airport, to its function as an important bomber training facility, then finally its return as SWFL’s most important commercial airport until RSW opened in 1984. Guests will test their skills to build the best paper airplane and commercial airliner, and see which one flies the farthest.

September 17, 2022: Hurricanes in Southwest Florida. Learn about the major hurricanes that have impacted our area and the destruction and devastation left behind, as well as important tips to stay safe during hurricane season.

October 15, 2022: Eerie Florida. Learn about the spooky side of Southwest Florida through retellings of eerie legends and mysterious creatures. Guests will make Halloween-themed crafts and take home Halloween-themed candy.

November 19, 2022: The River. Coinciding with the visit of our King Tut traveling exhibit, we will study the importance of the Nile River to the Ancient Egyptians and the Caloosahatchee River to Southwest Florida as a means of both transportation and food supply. One of our educators will be stationed at the Water Table exhibit to explain canal building, how rivers work, and how both civilizations filtered their water through a water filtration demonstration. Guests will build boats out of recycled materials to better understand water transportation.

December 17, 2022: Ancient Egyptians and the Calusa Indians as Great Engineers. Coinciding with the visit of our King Tut traveling exhibit, we will explore the similarities of both cultures and look at their great feats of engineering: the Egyptians’ pyramids and the Calusa’s shell mounds. Guests will get to attempt to build a house with different materials like shells, straw, clay and other natural resources in order to determine which houses are more structurally sound.
